Viva Las Bebes

A lot has happened since my last entry. I’ve been busy with school mostly, but I somehow also found the time to get pregnant.

My first thought was, “holy shit.” It’s not that it was an accident, but it was totally unexpected. Since the beginning of the year I have been a tad bit over-stressed and Nathan and I haven’t managed to have much “together time.”

We tried to relieve the stress a bit with a trip to Vegas, but unless you’re the type of person who is willing to totally indulge your addictive tendencies, Vegas is not the way to a good time. I really don’t care to go into how much I don’t ever want to go back to that city, but I was never so happy to board a three-hour flight back home in my life. It’s a sad thing indeed when the highlight of your trip was finishing Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets before landing in Detroit.

So the baby happened post-Vegas. As thrilling as it would have been to tell the kid he/she was conceived on the sixth floor of the Tropicana in a room with a mirror over the bed and a killer view of the airport, the blessed event actually occurred a couple of weeks later.

So far my thoughts have been less about what I need to get for the child and more about what the hell I’m going to wear. I’ve already invested around $200 in maternity clothes I don’t even need yet, but it doesn’t seem like enough. I’m the person who always has to be prepared, but I have no idea how I’m going to carry this baby. I already have a big stomach, so how much more is it going to grow? Unlike skinny women, I already have experience carrying excess weight, so I hope that works to my advantage. I also hope I don’t have to worry about maternity clothes for a few more months.

Thankfully there are a few plus-size maternity resources on the internet. A lot of women sell their “gently used” maternity wear on eBay. Motherhood Maternity and JC Penney are two other great sites. I’m a little hesitant to buy more, but like I said, I want to be prepared. The other day my mom handed me a Lane Bryant catalog with a lot of cottony stretchy stuff that looks promising.

Speaking of which, did you know there are two Lane Bryants? Or rather Lane Bryant has a Sybil-ish double personality in which by day she dresses like a homemaker and by night a hooker, because the clothes sold in this catalog are not the clothes sold in the store. Go figure.

So far I’m feeling fine. No morning sickness but I’m tired as hell. This baby is kicking my ass. I’ve been a total slug these past six weeks. I had to drop one of the two classes I was taking because I found it impossible to keep up with the workload and a full time job. The other class I’ve pretty much lost interest in and just hope to pass. Okay, that’s actually a fib. I don’t want to get less than a “B.” Actually, less than an “A-minus,” but that’s really pushing it.

My appetite has been a little off. I’ve been hungry but nothing sounds good. I’ve been really picky these past few weeks. It’s been driving Nathan nuts and making grocery shopping impossible. We’ve been eating out a lot lately, but I think I may be coming out of this phase. Yesterday around 11:30 I gobbled up the quesadilla I had made for lunch and then bought sushi and ate that too. When I got home, Nathan said he wanted to eat out so I suggested Famous Dave’s. It was the first time in a few weeks when anything on that menu (other than brisket or sausage) sounded good.

Nathan is thrilled. He wants a son, of course. He’s totally in love with Raymond and has visions of a little guy to be daddy’s buddy. I would like a girl because I really don’t want another little Nathan, but I’ll honestly be happy with either as long as he/she is healthy.
